Jake Cohen is a bright new star in the food world, a former food staffer at Saveur, then food editor of Tasting Table and Time Out New York, and most recently the editorial and test kitchen director of social media juggernaut the FeedFeed (@thefeedfeed). He has written for publications including Food52, Food & Wine, Real Simple, Every day with Rachael Ray, and more. He lives in New York City with his husband, Alex.
When most home cooks think of Jewish food, a few classics come to mind: chicken soup with matzo balls, challah, maybe a babka if you’re feeling ambitious. But as food writer and self-described “nice Jewish boy” Jake Cohen demonstrates in his stunning debut cookbook, JEW-ISH: A COOKBOOK: Reinvented Recipes from a Modern Mensch, Jewish food is so much more.
In JEW-ISH, Jake reinvents the food of his Ashkenazi heritage and draws inspiration from his husband’s Persian-Iraqi traditions to offer recipes that are modern, fresh, and enticing for a whole new generation of readers. Cohen created the book with the modern millennial in mind, experienced home cooks or not, who want elevated versions of old-school classics. Alongside the 100-plus recipes, he peppers the very personal narrative with his tips on entertaining, menus for holidays like Passover and Rosh Hashanah.

About The Project
Children’ Clinic at the Dr. Max and Gianna Glassman PTSD and Health Centre
Army service is required for citizens of Israel after high-school, and unfortunately as a result, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an issue that many Israelis live with daily, including children.
The Herzog Hospital in Israel has been treating PTSD patients in small spaces, scattered throughout Jerusalem, with demand for services continually increasing.
Even though not identified directly with the psychodrama that comes post-army service, the stress and trauma has exacerbated other psychiatric disorders in the community, increasing the load for referrals and treatments on the Herzog Hospital. Lack of space has meant a lack of ability to see patients, delaying vital treatments.
Thanks to contributions from JNF Canada and the Glassman Family, the Dr. Max z”l and Gianna Glassman PTSD and Health Centre will be established at the Herzog Medical Centre in 2021. The building will house the hospital’s Community Mental Health Center, Children’s Clinic, and Israel Center for the Treatment of Psychotrauma, and allow doctors to see 25% more patients. But there is still more work to be done.
JNF Future has made it their mission to raise $50,000 to contribute a room in the Children’s Clinic at the Glassman PTSD and Health Centre in Jerusalem, the newest addition to the Herzog Hospital.
