What is the Project?

The Ben Shemen Forest, the “green lung” in the heart of Israel, was severely damaged by a man-made Lag Ba’Omer wildfire in May 2019. The fire consumed about 2,000 dunams (500 acres) causing widespread and unprecedented damage and destroying almost entirely the nearby settlement of Mevo Modi’im.

This forest is one of the oldest and second largest forests in Israel, covering some 30,000 dunams (7,500 acres). It is a major tourist, leisure and recreation attraction as it is located in central Israel (near the city of Modi’in) and has a convenient topography with scenic roads and bike paths (constructed by JNF) that lead to the many JNF sites and picnic areas located throughout the forest, (most of which are accessible to those with special needs).

After working around the clock for a few days to extinguish the fire, JNF began working to restore the Ben Shemen Forest back to an active, green and vibrant forest.

Your donation will help JNF continue to preserve and protect the Ben Shemen Forest for the benefit of the region’s residents, wildlife and Israel’s natural heritage. Safeguarding Israel’s forests is an essential and important task for a greener future.
