About the Fig Tree

Of all the trees in Israel, the fig tree holds status and importance both historically and in modern Israeli culture. Low and short with multiple trunks and round, buttery leaves, the fig tree is frequently mentioned in the Bible and was one of the earliest fruits to be cultivated. The Hebrew name Te’enah is used both for the tree and the fruit it bears. Across the ancient world, it represented abundance, fertility and sweetness. It remains one of Israel’s central agricultural products, often paired with olives, grapes and pomegranates.
