About the Jerusalem Pine

The Jerusalem pine is the most common type of tree planted by JNF, as pine is suitable for growth in poor soil thanks to the symbiotic nature in which it uses land fungi to absorb it’s nutrients. Today, pine forests span across the country, with particular success in the Yatir forest on the edge of the Negev, and the Carmel and Galilee regions. In the Bible, the Mishnah and other literature, the pine tree was known as “the oil tree”, used for kindling the beacons that were lit to announce a new month.
